“If my home has a fire and damages my car parked in my garage, it is covered under my homeowner insurance policy, right?” No!
There is a misconception that your vehicle would be covered under your Homeowner’s Insurance policy if it is damaged in a fire or tornado. There is no coverage for vehicles, motorcycles or any recreational vehicles under your homeowner insurance policy. To have physical damage coverage, such as from a fire or wind/tornado damage, you need Comprehensive coverage under an auto or recreational vehicle policy.
A homeowners insurance policy will cover other items in your garage, such as personal use tools and a lawn tractor used to maintain your property. However, again, there would be no coverage to replace and/or repair your vehicle(s) and/or recreational vehicle(s) parked in your garage. However, some insurance companies will only charge one deductible for one specific loss (highest deductible normally applies) if there is a home loss and vehicle loss from the same incident (providing you have comprehensive coverage on the vehicle(s)), if you have your homeowner and automobile insurance with the same insurance company.
