Autumn is here! Bring on everything pumpkin-spiced! Our apologies to all of our summer lovers.
Fall is the perfect time to get your home prepared for winter and colder weather. Here are a few tips from Briggs Agency, Inc. to get your home ready this season:
- Check or install your Carbon Monoxide and smoke detectors.
- Yes, it is time to take out your screens in your doors and put up your storm windows.
Drain and clear out any debris in your water heater.
Heating system – contact your preferred heating service and have them conduct an annual heating system check-up. Also, check your vents and make sure they are clean and not blocked.
Wood burning fireplace and the chimney. You can clear any ashes and charred wood (make sure to do so when safe and discard in a metal bin). Contact your local chimney cleaner and have them clean your chimney and check that your damper is in working order.
Clean out the gutters. If you cannot safely do so, please contact a service. Clearing your gutters of leaves and debris can help avoid ice dams and damage to your roof and gutters.
Put away your garden hoses and be sure that your outdoor spigot is clear of water to avoid freezing over the winter.
- Check for drafts and cracks and seal to avoid energy loss.
