Mother Nature can serve up some storms that include high winds, heavy rains and hail. These storms can pass through quickly but can leave damage to your home. As a homeowner, what do you do when your home sustains damage from a storm?
First, ensure that your loved ones are safe. Once safe, look at your home carefully to see if you have any missing shingles, siding, structural or hail damage. If you suspect that your roof has sustained damage, contact a trusted roofing professional to see if you need any tarps and get an estimate for repairs. In your policyholder agreement with your insurance carrier, there is an understanding that you will protect your home from any further damage after a loss. If there is any structural damage, and the home is safe to continue to stay in, then you should contact a professional contractor for an estimate and for any temporary repairs to avoid further damage. Once safe to do so, take photos of your home’s damage(s) to keep for your adjuster (if a claim is filed).
After you have determined there is damage to your home, contact your trusted Insurance Agent to discuss further. Your agent will inform you of your deductible and have a conversation with you to see if a claim is worth filing. The policy deductible is the portion of your loss that you are responsible for paying before your insurance coverage kicks in. If a claim is necessary, your agent will contact your insurance carrier and report a new claim. An adjuster, from your insurance carrier, will contact you normally within 24-48 business hours to get your statement and move forward with the claims process. Be sure to have all photos and estimates for repair available to provide for your adjuster.
