Oh Christmas Tree… Christmas Light Decorating Safety Tips

Tis the season to enjoy beautiful Christmas trees and decorate your home with beautiful lights!

We wish all of you a safe holiday season and want to share tips to help keep your home and loved ones safe. Feel free to visit the Electrical Safety Foundation International for additional electrical safety tips at www.esfi.org.

Tree Lighting Tips Artificial trees are usually a safer option for your home because real trees can dry out and become a fire hazard. If you choose a real tree, be sure to keep it watered and dispose of your tree once it shows signs of being dry. Also, be sure to turn the tree lights off prior to leaving your home. If you hang lights on your tree, it’s suggested to have no more than 3 strands of lights connected for one electrical outlet. LED lights are preferred to avoid high heat and they save on your electrical costs! Inspect throw out any light strands that show any damage or unreplaceable broken lights in order to avoid shocks and cuts. Outdoor Lighting Tips Use only lights designated as “Outdoor Lights”. Outdoor lights have been designed to be water and weather resistant, in comparison to indoor lights. While using a ladder, be sure to follow all safety rules and have someone assist you. Again, inspect your lights for any damage and throw out any damaged light strands. LED lights are recommended since they use less heat and electricity. Use surge protectors, plugs and extension cords designated for outdoor use.
